The annotation in contemporary hand next to Pritchard's signture reads: In 1842 at Tahiti brought France and England almost into unfriendly collision.
George Pritchard (1796-1883) arrived in Tahiti in 1825 to undertake missionary work for the London Missionary Society. In 1837 he was appointed British consul for the Georgian, Society, Navigator's and Friendly Islands, and advised Queen Pomare throughout the critical period leading to the temporary annexation by France of the islands in 1843. He returned to England in 1856, and in 1878 published an account, Queen Pomare and her Country.
