The Anga people (known as the Kukukuku on the remote Upper
Watut River) first encountered Australian miners in 1922, when mining
at the Koranga Creek gold field near Wau was commenced by Park
and Nettleton. By
1936-7, when the British ethnographer Beatrice Blackwood carried out
fieldwork among the fierce Kukukuku people, still only very few Europeans
had ventured into the Upper Watut.
