GALLERY INFORMATION

Welcome to Oceania Ethnographica, a gallery devoted primarily to the cultures and history of the Pacific region. Oceania Ethnographica is based in Melbourne, Australia. We sell early photographs and postcards;
rare and out-of-print books; printed ephemera; historic field recordings of music and ceremony, and authentic tribal artefacts. From April, 2008, we will also be introducing several new categories on the website which will cover both ethnographic and non-ethnographic 19th century photography from the Americas, Europe and Asia, as well as carte de visite photographs and stereoviews from Australia and New Zealand. All of these items are from our private collection.

Our inventory of early photographs and postcards contains rare and fascinating images of the indigenous cultures of Australia, Melanesia, Micronesia and Polynesia. In these regions, from the 1860's through to the 1950's, the camera captured virtually every aspect of now-vanished traditional societies. It also recorded - both deliberately and incidentally - the impact of missionary, trader and colonizer upon the diverse peoples and landscapes of Oceania.

You are welcome to write to us in English, French or German. We are always happy to answer your questions or receive your comments, and look forward to hearing from you.
