Patagonian Indians, including the cacique Casemiro
Carte de visite photograph, dated 1873
100 x 62 mm
The inscription verso reads:
The family of the chief Casemiro of the Patagonian Indians. Copied in Valparaiso from the original taken in Santa Cruz, Patagonia and brought from Sandy Point Feb 1873 by J.P. Root. Casemiro is the principal cacique or chief of the Patagonians - on the left of the picture are two natives of the Argentine Republic who live with the Patagonians and are quite as dark as the indians. This group & a large number of other members of the tribe were seen after at Sandy Point at the time the photograph was brought from thence.
