Portrait of a young married Aboriginal couple, Mona-Mona Mission, near Kuranda, north Queensland
Original photograph on album page, c 1930's
135 x 85 mm
The Mona-Mona Mission was established by the Seventh-day Adventists. In 1913 large numbers of Djabugay people were taken from their land by the government and forced to live on the mission, which supervised the cutting and milling of local timber. The mission officially closed in 1962.
Private family photographs such as this one have rarely survived - this portrait is indeed a precious social document.
Condition is only fair, with some tears and marks. |
