Aboriginal
woman holding club
Carte-de-visite photograph, c 1874-1891
Photographer: Saul Solomon
Printed on reverse: S. Solomon, School of Photography, 51 Rundle
St. Adelaide.
100 x 62 mm
A contrived studio setting using artefacts as props. The subject, dressed in possum skins (southeast Australia),
holds an enormous sword club (Northern Queensland); to her left leans
a very long spearthrower (Queensland); below that a small club,
lil-lil (probably from Western New South Wales), rests on an angle
against a parrying shield; a coiled basket lies on the ground to her
right.
Very good condition; minor staining lower right (not affecting
image). |
